由于高失败率，近年来澳洲入籍考试备受争议。一项调查显示，在2018年顺利入籍的澳人中，有超1200人曾经历过3次失败。
据《每日邮报》报道，同年在85269名申请人中，有4807人未能通过考试。高失败率加上移民部门批准处理速度慢，令不少人质疑测试系统的有效性。
政客Tony Burke和Julian Hill表示，无数生活在澳洲的PR持有者想要表达他们对澳洲的忠诚，结果却因为一个部门的“黑洞”被搁置了。
审计报告显示，在过去4年里，等待入籍申请获批的人数猛增771％，截至2018年6月30日，共有244765人还在等待结果。此外，澳洲政府还计划出台新的立法，如果申请者3次考不过，那么两年内都不得参加入籍考试。
澳洲民族社区联合会（Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia ）代理首席执行官Mohammad Al-Khafajj认为，入籍测试并不能衡量申请者对澳洲的忠诚度。
